Timing Mt. Fuji Right

In true Zitee fashion, we jumpstarted the year with travel. It's literally what we did on the first day of the year! Where did we go? We went to the ever so beautiful Japan.

Having only a few days of stay, we sought for a great time ahead no matter what. Our main destination was the rural and resort town of Fujikawaguchiko in Yamanashi Prefecture. We wanted to explore the area around Mount Fuji, and hoped for a great view of the iconic mountain. And we got what we hoped for and more!

The sky was mostly clear for the two days we were there, that the mountain was picturesque every time we looked at it. Not just that, we stayed near Kawaguchiko (Lake Kawaguchi) - one of the Fuji Goko (Fuji Five Lakes). We could simply walk to Oike Park to get a very nice view of the mountain. And with clear and windless weather, the right condition was set to allow a rare sight: Upside-down/Inverted Fuji. And we got to see it for two days straight. Oh, what good timing we had! That wasn't planned, by the way.

So, how do you time it right? The least precipitation is during winter, so the chances of catching the inverted Fuji are higher. And then narrow it down to the days with clear skies and no wind. If you live a full year in Japan, then just keep an eye on Fujikawaguchiko's weather forecast and pick the day when the right conditions meet.

Going to Kawaguchiko from Narita International Airport by Public Transport

Kawaguchiko is the farthest station for buses and trains to get near the lake of the same name.

  • To be able to enjoy one ride only, you should catch the bus going to Kawaguchiko operated by Keisei. Note however, that there is only one bus available at the airport terminal you land on, that you should catch! Though it is also shown in the linked site that there is another bus you can catch at an earlier time, operated by Fujikyuko (they don't offer direct bus for the opposite direction though). If you land on Haneda Airport however, there are more buses available, which is operated by Keikyu Bus.

  • You can also take the train all the way there. One route is taking the train to Shinjuku, then transfer to the train going to Otsuki, and finally, transfer to the train going to Kawaguchiko. The last train is not operated by JR Line, thus, you cannot purchase a ticket all the way to Kawaguchiko from Narita. You should buy the last ticket at Otsuki station. To be guided by someone and to purchase tickets for many people via credit card, you can go to the manned ticket station and make the necessary inquiries.

  • Another alternative is a two-ride approach via Shinjuku station. By train or bus, head to Shinjuku. If you ride on Airport Limousine bus, you can get off the Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal directly. If by train, you would have to walk to the bus terminal before you can get a ride to Kawaguchiko. Google Maps suggests this route.

It's not only the year that's new, but also the decade! Where did you (or will you) travel first in 2020? Tell us by leaving a comment.
